Martha Tawapei’s summer 2012 collection is a special collection

If there’s anything this week has taught us, it’s that African fashion is definitely in hot demand! From the old collections to the new collections, the details and designs are magnificent!! This week, we are going back in time to explore a sexy, sassy and vibrant collection from a fantastic Zimbabwean born designer. Martha Tawapei is a self-confessed ‘fashion lover’ and her summer 2012 collection is one collection that lights up our heart every time we remember it. We spoke to the designer via Skype to get a few personal details about the collection and how she started as a designer.

Fabrics and stitches excited me at a very early age,” she says. “I remember getting into trouble countless times for cutting my clothes with hopes of redesigning them or making dresses for my dolls.

The designer continues with how she got inspired to name her collection – “I named this collection ‘I am Every Woman’ because of how women inspire me. I channelled all the inspiration I got from women who dance, love, cry, sing, the bearer of emotions. It’s a personal collection for women who enjoy looking elegant and at the same time casual. The fabrics I used include Chiffon and Chitenge”

Martha plans to launch her 2013 collection sometime in August and also plans to partner with a few NGO’s across Africa to give back to displaced kids and orphans who are in desperate need of relief. “My goal one day is to be able to empower as many orphans as I possibly can. Growing up as an orphan has made me realise how much we all need a stepping stone and that’s another lesson I learnt from the great woman who had a great big heart, my mother.”

With next month fast approaching, all eyes will be on Martha’s 2013/2014 collections and we can’t wait to get our hands on all the exclusives as soon as they are available.

Tell us what you think of the collection you just viewed by sending us a tweet on Twitter @zenmagafrica or you can comment on this post and we will respond immediately.
