Last month, Italian designer and creative director of Givenchy, Riccardo Tisci selected the new face of the haute couture brand and it was none other than Erykah Badu. The neo soul singer was featured in their new Spring/Summer 2014 Campaign, featuring top models Asia Chow, Angolan model Maria Borges, Eboni Riley and Dominik. The official collection was released last night and here are a few editorial images from the campaign.

According to the designer Riccardo Tisci on why he selected Erykah Badu to be the new face of the brand, the designer said “She’s one of the most stylish women I’ve met in my life and she’s got such a good sense of proportion, of colours.”  The spring-summer 2014 campaign displays some of the label’s more formal pieces with sharp lines, interesting details and, there is a hint of androgyny to the images.

One of the things we love about Riccardo Tisci is the fact that he isn’t afraid to work with women of colour. In fact, he has been promoting women of colour on the runway and in almost all of his campaigns for well over a decade now. Besides Joan Smalls and Maria Borges, he has also worked with other top models like Grace Mahary, Dalianah Arekion, and Daniela Braga, among others. Does he think the world will catch up to his lead on featuring women of colour? “I hope so,” Riccardo said. “It’s 2013. Everybody’s being so cool about Instagram, about Facebook, about social media—everybody’s being so open. At the end of the day, why are not so many black girls or Latin girls in shows? When you have an American president who is black! When I see this happening, it’s quite sad, I think. People can be so avant-garde, so advanced, but actually not, because people are still making differences between skin colour.”

So what do you think guys? Is Riccardo Tisci telling other designers something? Is 2014 the year we see more dark skinned models, women of colour and even plus size models on the runway and in fashion campaigns? Well, time will tell! Meanwhile, we seriously love this new collection by Givenchy and all the models look radiant in the pieces.
