Selasi+Zen+Magazine+AfricaSelasi is one artist to watch this 2014. Apart from being an incredible artist, he is also an incredible producer

Zen: Tell us a little bit about yourself. Where are you from?
Selasi: My name is Selasi and I’m an artist, songwriter, producer and engineer based in the United States. I was born in Ghana but my parents are from Ghana and Nigeria so I consider myself a product of Africa.

Zen: Do you remember how you got into music?
Selasi: I first fell in love with music at a Pentecostal church where my mom took me to. From the moment I saw the band play, I fell in love with music and I knew immediately this was something I wanted to be part of someday.

Zen: Has music always been a career you wanted to chase?
Selasi: Although I went to college and got my bachelors degree in International Business Marketing, music has always been a part of my life. Growing up, I was told that if you have a hobby for a job, then you’ll never work a day in your life. So for me the choice was quite obvious. Zen: What inspired your single “Call The Police”? Selasi: I was in the studio making the beat and the melody kept playing in my head so I laid down the melody, before I finished the beat.

Zen: How many other singles have you released after that track?
Selasi: There’s a full Shades Of Grey EP available for sale on iTunes which features 5 different songs: “Gone,” “Tear Up The Floor,” “Ups and Downs (Tie Masem),” “Rock Steady” and “Call The Police.” I’ve already filmed a video for “Call The Police,” and “Ups & Downs” and I am in the process of filming the video for the next single “Gone“. Zen: Is the music industry very demanding? Selasi: If music wasn’t a passion, the demands of the industry can feel overwhelming, but my love for music makes it more tolerable. Zen: Which artists inspire you daily to become a better artist? Selasi: I draw inspiration from a lot of places, people, and things. But, if I had to select a few artists who inspire me then it would have to be Bob Marley, Matisyahu, and Jay Z.

Zen: Any new collaborations we can expect from your camp?
Selasi: I produced a record with Sarkodie and John Dumelo called Ask Dumelo which I’m also featured on and we’re talking about releasing more music together. I also recorded a song with Stonebwoy called My Boo which is yet to be released.

Zen: Which artists would you love to work with?
Selasi: I would love to work with Jay Z and Adele. I think they are phenomenal!

Zen: When is your album out?
Selasi: For now, I am currently promoting my “Shades of Grey” EP and I’m planning a promo tour.

Zen: What do you think about African fashion?
Selasi: I completely love it! I think African fashion gives so many options and creative room to express yourself.

Zen: Is fashion a big part of your daily life or are you a regular dresser?
Selasi: I am into fashion, but I don’t just jump on any trend that comes out. How I dress is a reflection of who I am so I take trend/styles and make a few changes to make it mine.

Zen: What’s next for you?
SelasiMusic is my love. It’s my passion. I will always be working at it but I also have a few other business ventures that I’m working on at the moment like my new T-shirt line and a few others. I will definitely update you as soon as everything is ready.
